Ce Robot est un Artiste

Bonjour! Je m’appel François. Je suis un robot et un artiste!

François the Art Bot

Here’s Charlie, 6, making his very own Art Bot.

And here are les frères de François!

Our First Camp!

For Hello World Campers, the last week of August was a whirlwind 4 days of making awesome stuff.

We had 10 very enthusiastic campers, aged 7-11. After we got to know each other a little bit on the first day, we jumped right in to website building. We had an exercise break with Heather from Personal Edge Training, then we started talking about robots.

We were lucky to have borrowed a few Hummingbird Kits from our friends at the Brooklyn Robot Foundry, and everyone spent a few hours learning how to hook up the various inputs and outputs to the Hummingbird board. We wrapped up the day with a visit to a little company located just around the corner from Communitech.

We spent all day Tuesday at Kwartzlab, a most excellent makerspace in Kitchener. At Kwartzlab we worked on our robots, and each spent some time printing our names in 3D, and making awesome laser-cut signs. After our time making stuff at Kwartzlab, at least one camper wants his own laser cutter, and really, who can blame him!

Wednesday we were back at Communitech to talk about video games! We had a Google Hangout with William, a young video game developer in New York, then we hunkered down to create our own games using GameSalad. We finished the day with a fieldtrip to THEMUSEUM.

Let’s Get Physical!

Getting enough activity is especially important when we’re sitting in front of a computer all day, and we’re super excited that Heather Lee, from Personal Edge Training, will be joining us next week! Heather will talk to us about the importance of physical fitness, and lead us through a mini-workout and some stretches. You can read more about Heather on Edge’s website.

Online Safety Presentation

Great news! Michael Redfearn, a Digital Literacy consultant who has most recently spent 7 years as a K-12 Technology Learning consultant and E-Learning Contact with the Waterloo Catholic District school board, will be giving a presentation on online safety to our campers. Mr. Redfearn was a teacher at St. David when I was in high school, and even though we are now both adults, I will have trouble calling him by his first name. His full bio is on his blog.

Prepping for Camp

The first-ever Hello World Camp is in 3 short weeks! We have an awesome curriculum planned around building websites, games, and, thanks to our friends at the Brooklyn Robot Foundry, we have some excellent robot-making and programming in the works.

In other news, the lovely and ridiculously talented Ivonne is creating an amazing Hello World Camp logo so that we can offer t-shirts and other cool stuff to our campers and community supporters. Fun!

Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to hear about mentor opportunities, and for your official invitation to our first-ever Hello World Camp Demo Day on August 29. See you soon!

Welcome!

We are so excited to introduce Hello World Camp to the awesome community of Waterloo Region! Our first camp, for kids aged 8-12, is scheduled to take place August 26-29. We will explore different aspects of technology, including coding, robotics, 3D printing, and multimedia. Check back here or contact us for more details!
